Every project presents unique conditions and requirements. Materials
and methods are constantly
changing and evolving. "Pre-packaged" solutions are
rarely adequate. That's where Stafford's experience
really makes the difference. We know what works
and we know what doesn't.
Waterproofing
Stafford, under contract to Florida International University
in Miami, conducted an extensive evaluation of roofing, walls, windows
and below-grade waterproofing for FIU's Performing Arts Center to
determine the sources of water entry at various locations in the
facility. Stafford also performed non-destructive testing to determine
where to reinforce exterior masonry walls.

Government Facilities
The King Federal Building is owned and managed by the US
General Services Administration. Stafford has provided consultation
on this and numerous other GSA properties. Stafford evaluated the
windows, walls and roof systems on these facilities and prepared
design plans and specifications to correct assembly deficiencies.
Stafford has also provided construction administration services
and full-time construction monitoring on many of these facilities.

Manufacturing Facilities
Stafford has provided services to numerous manufacturing facilities.
In 1985, Sony Music selected Stafford to perform a roof evaluation
survey of their vinyl recording manufacturing facility. Subsequent
to the roof evaluation, Stafford designed the new roof system. Since
then, Stafford has provided an annual roof asset management plan
and overseen the implementation of maintenance repairs.

Historic Facilities
Sirrine Hall & Riggs Hall are on the campus of Clemson University,
Clemson, South Carolina. Stafford evaluated the existing clay tile
roof systems on these two historic university buildings and designed
new roof systems by replacing underlayment and salvaging as much
original clay tile as possible. The roof of the Riggs building was
completely replaced with salvaged tile over new underlayment, thus
saving money and preserving history.

The Old Charlotte City Hall Building, as it is
known in Charlotte, North Carolina, is on the Historic Register.
Stafford designed the replacement roof system to meet the requirements
of the local historic landmarks commission, while also providing
a state-of-the-art roof system which is expected to provide long-term
service. Stafford has provided similar services for several City
of Charlotte facilities.

Special challenges
Orlando International Airport's main terminal
building was built with a new, modified bitumen
roof system. Soon after construction, the mem-
brane began to exhibit widespread cracking.
Stafford conducted a thorough evaluation of the
roof assembly, including destructive testing. Samples
were extracted and the composition of the
membrane was laboratory tested to determine the
cause for the unusual cracking. Micro-photographs
were used to determine the depth of the cracking.

Stafford has designed new and replacement roof systems for many
high-rise coastal facilities, including Rainbow Condominium
in Ocean City, Maryland. These facilities can be exposed to heavy
winds, and the systems must be designed to withstand these conditions.
Stafford is proud to meet these challenges.
