Alex W. Montgomery, PE Project Manager
Mr. Montgomery started in the construction industry as a laborer on construction projects that ranged from houses to schools to prisons. These projects developed in Mr. Montgomery a keen interest in the fundamental principles of design engineering, which in turn inspired him to seek and acquire an engineering degree. Mr. Montgomery's interest in construction and design remains unabated.
Mr. Montgomery began his engineering career in 2004 as a testing engineer for a soils and materials testing company with emphasis in the mix design and testing of concrete. During this time, Mr. Montgomery’s desire to be involved with investigations of construction related issues with materials grew.
Mr. Montgomery later accepted a position with a forensic engineering firm specializing in the investigation of construction defects in new construction and older building restoration in concrete construction projects and exterior façade assessments, as well as asphalt assessment and remediation design. Mr. Montgomery gained experience and coordinated on site assessments of parking decks, paper mills, office buildings, schools, and condominium buildings. Mr. Montgomery gained experience with various investigative techniques including pressurized and non-pressurized water testing, flood testing of balconies, intrusive view port observations, microscopic inspection of samples taken from site construction and chemical analysis of materials used in construction. Ashley Aiken McDuffee, EI, LEED® AP Assistant Project Engineer
Ms. McDuffee joined Stafford Consulting Engineers and is currently working as an Assistant Project Engineer in the Raleigh office. While earning her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at Bucknell University, Ms. McDuffee served as the student representative on the steering committee for Bucknell University’s J. Paul Getty Trust Campus Heritage Project and Preservation Plan.
In her historic preservation graduate program, Ms. McDuffee focused her studies on building pathology, materials conservation and building diagnostics and monitoring. Ms. McDuffee presented her Masters thesis entitled “Evaluating the Threat of Environmental Change on Historic Resources: A Case Study and Assessment of Tools” at the 2007 conference for the Association for Preservation Technology International. While working toward her graduate degree, Ms. McDuffee interned at an engineering firm in San Francisco, California where she was introduced to building envelope design and review and developed a strong interest in building science, especially as it pertains to historic buildings.
Prior to joining Stafford Consulting Engineers, Ms. McDuffee worked for an engineering firm in Seattle, Washington when she gained experience in performing building condition assessments, investigative testing, window performance testing, data logger monitoring and construction administration. She was also responsible for developing building envelope details, peer-reviewing construction documents, and composing site visit, testing and assessment reports for various projects. Dennis W. Mashburn, RRO Senior Technician
Mr. Mashburn joined Stafford Consulting Engineers in 1984. He previously worked as a foreman, general superintendent and project estimator for roof contracting firms in Florida. Mr. Mashburn has served as resident inspector and provided quality control inspection on numerous major roofing and re-roofing projects throughout the United States. He also has extensive experience with below-grade waterproofing systems installations, plaza deck waterproofing assemblies, tuckpointing of masonry walls, and the installation of sealant systems at wall joints and in conjunction with window wall construction. Mr. Mashburn is a certified nuclear moisture gauge operator and a certified infrared thermographer. He is also certified by the Roof Consultants Institute as a Registered Roof Observer. Thomas F. Seymour Technician
Prior to joining Stafford Consulting Engineers, Mr. Seymour was employed by a North Carolina based roofing and waterproofing consulting firm. His experiences include conducting material and quality control inspections, leading pre-bid and pre-construction meetings and monitoring large, low-slope roof replacement and waterproofing jobs throughout the eastern United States. He was also utilized as a commercial property due-diligence inspector, with the primary charge of documenting a wide variety of structural, utility and aesthetical concerns for commercial lenders.
Mr. Seymour continues to develop both his on-site and project specification skills with Stafford Consulting Engineers as he assists Stafford’s Project Managers with specifying, bidding, project administration of various roofing and waterproofing projects including project submittal review, trouble-shooting field conditions and product research. Additional responsibilities include roof assessments, surveys, and drainage and roof evaluations. [ back to top ]
Daniel P. Lane Technician
Mr. Lane joined Stafford Consulting Engineers in 2007 and is currently working as an Engineer in the Charlotte office. While working for Stafford Consulting Engineers, Mr. Lane has expanded his knowledge of the design and construction of the building envelope industry. Since joining Stafford, he has conducted observation inspections, field investigations and has assisted in the design of new and/or roof replacement systems. He has conducted numerous water testing procedures and leak investigations of window and curtain wall assemblies.
The inspections that he has been apart of involve wall cladding, roofing and water proofing systems. The wall cladding systems include stucco, metal panels and stone veneer. Roofing systems include built up, single ply, shingles, standing seam metal, and slate. Waterproofing systems include those installed below grade, on retaining walls and below slabs. [ back to top ]
Carl G. Hardy Technician
Mr. Hardy recently joined Stafford Consulting Engineers and is currently working as a Technician in the Charlotte office. While earning his undergraduate degree in Construction Management at East Carolina University, Mr. Hardy developed a strong understanding for the Construction industry. The Construction program provided him with knowledge of all phases of construction including, construction estimating, contracts and specifications, architectural plans and review, and project planning and scheduling.
As a part of the curriculum to earn a Construction Management Degree, Mr. Hardy completed an internship with a residential home builder. During his time building residential homes, Mr. Hardy gained experience in performing quality control inspections, managing employees and construction administration.
Prior to joining Stafford Consulting Engineers, Mr. Hardy was employed with a commercial glass and curtain wall company. While working in the curtain wall industry, Mr. Hardy’s duties were expanded to all types of Commercial projects associated with the design and installation of complex curtain wall systems.
Mr. Hardy continues to expand his knowledge of the building envelope industry with Stafford Consulting Engineers. Since joining the firm, he has performed observation inspections and reporting on commercial and multifamily residential projects. He has also assisted in the review and inspection of below grade waterproofing systems, completed roof surveys and performed water testing on windows and curtain wall assemblies. [ back to top ]
Buster Honeycutt Construction Monitor
Prior to joining Stafford , Mr. Honeycutt worked for a commercial roofing company for 11 years. As a Quality Control Superintendent, Mr. Honeycutt specialized in the management of the installation of roofing systems assuring they were installed as per the manufacturers specifications. He performed all final inspections with manufacturers for warranty purposes. In his time since joining Stafford , Mr. Honeycutt has performed full-time & part-time inspections, evaluation and investigation services for many colleges, k-12 school districts, industrial facilities, churches, hospitals and federal buildings throughout the Southeastern U.S. [ back to top ]
Kenneth D. Ford Construction Monitor
Prior to joining Stafford Consulting Engineers, Mr. Ford was President and Owner of a roofing contractor company. He has been involved in the roofing industry for 30 years beginning as a laborer and advancing quickly to roof mechanic, focusing on the technical issues involved with the ever changing roofing industry.
After four years, Mr. Ford advanced to foreman where his duties included hiring and training laborers and mechanics, making sure projects were completed according to plans and specifications and within the allotted time allotted and budget. With 13 years in supervision, Mr. Ford installed all types of built up, modified, shingles, shakes, slate, EPDM, PVC, TPO, standing seam metal, flat lock soldered, metal shingles, ornamental metals, gutters, fascia, soffit, siding panels, and below grade waterproofing, with many different manufacturers and different systems for each.
Mr. Ford’s duties were expanded to estimating all types of commercial, industrial and institutional roofing and waterproofing projects, scheduling, maintaining a properly trained workforce of five or six crews with multiple projects in different stages of completion in progress at any given time.
Mr. Ford acquired a reputation while working with architects, engineers, roofing manufacturers, project managers and property owners for troubleshooting and designing details for difficult situations. [ back to top ]
